Ancient Chinese documents are known as"Kanbun"in Japan,Korea and Vietnam.Kanbun-Kundoku is a method to subjoin special punctuation marks to ancient Chinese documents that allowed ancient Japanese to understand these documents even if they had not learned ancient Chinese language. There are three bhypotheses on the origin of Kanbun-Kundoku:origins from Japan, from the Korean Peninsula,or from the Dunhuang manuscripts. But all of these three hypotheses lack sufficient evidence. This article attempts to make a comparison between the special punctuation marks seen in the existing Dunhuang manuscripts and punctuation marks seen in the existing Japanese Kundoku manuscripts in the Edo period to provide new evidence to support the relationship between Kanbun-Kundoku and Dunhuang manuscripts, and to support that it reflects the great role that China's excellent ancient cultural heritage has played in the development of cultural processes in neighboring countries.
