Tachibana no Hayanari was a Japanese student coming to China with the Japanese envoy delegationunder the command of Mikado. During his visit in Tang Dynasty, he visited many personages and learned both lyre-playing and calligraphy. After his return to Japan, he earned great reputation and was honored as one of the group ofthree outstanding calligraphers called Sanpitsu(Three Brushes), together with Kūkai and Emperor Saga. Based onrelevant historical materials, the article systematically explores the life experience of Tachibana no Hayanari. Deep-ly affected by the calligraphic style in Jin and Tang Dynasty, he made great contribution to the calligraphic and cul-tural communication between China and Japan. His works also have significant meaning to the exploration of the cal-ligraphic style in Tang Dynasty.
