Empower Teachers: SoTL and Faculty Development——Studies of the SC Undergraduate Education Reform in the USA

摘要 本文首先简要介绍了美国SoTL的发展情况,然后介绍了其发展中的六个重要讨论,着重介绍了舒尔曼对SoTL的思考。舒尔曼把大学教学视为一项专门职业,但认为大学教学作为一个专门职业还很不成熟,因此主张通过大规模开展SoTL来推动大学教学研究学术化,并以此来建立专门化的大学教师教育与培养体系,从而为持续提高大学教学质量奠定坚实基础。在此基础上,本文就当前中国如何开展SoTL提出了若干建议。本文第二部分首先简要介绍了美国大学教学支持工作的基本情况,然后建议中国高校教学支持中心应配合中国当前本科教学改革,以课程反思和课程再设计为抓手,帮助教师结合自己的课程开展研究,文章还并就如何开展这项工作提出了若干建议。 This paper first briefly introduces the development of SoTL in the USA since 1990,and then discusses six debates regarding SoTL,particularly about Schulman’s thoughts on SoTL.Schulman regards college teacher as a professional,and college instruction as a professional but still in very much immature.So,he advocates to promote SoTL to foster the professionalizationof college instruction and his dream is to establish a professionalized training system for college instruction.He believe this will lay a solid foundation for continuing educational quality improvement in higher education.Based on these discussions,this paper offers suggestions on how to carry out SoTL in China.The second part of this paper introduces briefly about the faculty teaching support in the USA,and suggests that the Chinese teaching support centers should cooperate with China’s current SC reform with activities such as course reflection and course redesign and that will help faculty to conduct SoTL inquiries with their own courses.How to conduct such activities are also discussed in this paper as well.
