摘要
托尔斯泰指责莎士比亚的戏剧人物塑造不真实、缺乏宗教信仰的质地。从新批评的视域来重审这一文坛公案,可以发现,无论是艺术手法与风格,还是人生态度与价值观,托尔斯泰与莎士比亚都有共通之处。他们都主张以悖论、反讽等艺术手法来表达情感体验与人性的复杂,都怀疑科学与理性,强调文学的道德功能。托尔斯泰甚至与莎士比亚的悲剧作品之间存在精神上的对应关系。因此,托尔斯泰攻击莎士比亚,并非因为艺术理念与风格不同,亦非对待人生的态度不同,而是出于虚荣与嫉妒心理。
Tolstoy accused Shakespeare of making his dramatic characters unreal and lacking religious connotations.But,from the perspective of the New Criticism,it can be found that Tolstoy and Shakespeare share common features in art technique,style,life attitude and values.Both of them advocate using such artistic methods as paradox and irony to express the complexity of emotional experience and human nature,doubted science and reason,and emphasized the moral function of literature.There is even a spiritual correspondence between Tolstoy and Shakespeare’s tragic works.Therefore,it can be said that Tolstoy attacked Shakespeare not because of his different artistic ideas and styles,nor because of his different attitudes towards life,but because of his own vanity and jealousy.
