摘要
美国民间学者大卫·席勒(David Schiller)的《论语》新译本Confucius:Discussions/Conversations or The Analects(Lunyu),在人名、核心概念词、句子篇章层面的“译”及其“注”方面有一定的特色,其在核心概念词英译中体现出动态化、整体化的特点,在句子篇章层面则集对译和厚译于一体。总的来说,席勒译本对《论语》进行了精辟独到的整体化、语境化的解读,具有很强的工具性和研究价值。此外,海外民间学者对《论语》进行英译,也标志着海外《论语》研究迈向平民化,在《论语》英译史上具有独特的意义和价值。
This paper makes a general review of Confucius:Discussions/Conversations or The Analects(Lunyu)translated by David Schiller,an American scholar,elaborating on the characteristics of the translation and annotations in terms of people’s names,key concepts,sentences and passages.It is found that Schiller takes a dynamic and holistic approach in translating the key concepts,while his translation of sentences and passages embodies a combination of formal equivalence and thick translation.Generally,Schiller’s version,by way of his ingenious holistic and contextualized interpretation,is of instrumental and research value.Moreover,the translation of Lunyu by an overseas independent scholar symbolizes the plebification of Confucian studies,thus having great significance in the translation history of Lunyu.
