Precipitation is one of the most important meteorological factors and a key component in the urban hydrological cycle. In this study,five-year moving average, wavelet transformation and Mann-Kendall trend tests were applied to analyze daily precipitation data over 51 years from 1966-2016 to characterize precipitations in Tongzhou on annual, seasonal and monthly scales. It was found that annual precipitation decreased at a rate of 0.44 mm per year with multiple cycles;the precipitation was mainly concentrated in the summer, accounting for 72.1%of total annual precipitation and decreasing at a rate of 2.33 mm per year. The trend was found to be increasing in spring and autumn, with an increasing trend of 0.36 and 1.12 mm·a^-1 respectively. The trend in winter was the weakest, decreasing with a trend of 0.03 mm·a^-1.Monthly precipitation was found to be mainly concentrated in July and August, accounting for more than half of the total in a year, with a reducing trend of 0.88 and 1.68 mm respectively.Precipitation hardly changed at all in January,February or December.Precipitation events with daily precipitation≥10 and 20 mm were found to be mainly concentrated in summer-a decrease in the number of precipitation days was the main cause of reduced summer precipitation.
