“The Man in the Ear” is the second novel of Strange Tales from a Liaozhai Studio. Tan Jinxuan, the protagonist,is a real Zichuan man according to textual research. He was not only a Confucian scholar, but also learned Taoist Qigong. He also used a Buddhist posture, and eventually went into the devil and heard hallucinations. The words of the little man in his ear may be the reflection of his hidden subconsciousness. Pu Songling's creative inspiration may come from “the echo insects” story of the Song people’s notes.
