One of the necessary conditions of achieving the cross-Strait peace lies in the clarification of the social base underlying the qualities of the DPP voters. What are the factors that affect voting behavior in Taiwan? As delineated by the existing literature, the determinants of voting behavior have been found to be involved in the identification ranging from such issues of ’identity politics’ as ethnicity,’independence versus unification’ stance, and party identification to class identification. With the introduction of ’skill specificity’, this study enriches the voting behavior theory with a new interpretative framework: skill specificity simultaneously determines both income and vote choice. Skill specificity consists of the specific skills and the general ones. Following economic globalization, the ’deindustrialization’ supposedly aggravates the unemployment risk imposed on specific-skilled workers, insofar as a vast majority of them are occupied in manufacturing industries. Therefore, workers of specific skills are more likely to vote for the political party that complies with their appeals. A quantitative analysis based on the 2016 Taiwan election and democratization studies confirms such theory as aforementioned.
