China and Japan are the close neighboring countries with the long history of cultural exchange. Since ancient times, a lot of fairy stories have been seen in Chinese and Japanese literatures. Most of these stories derived from the obvious comparison between the happiness of becoming immortals and the misfortune of realistic society. It also reflects the fact that Chinese and Japanese desire to realize the good wishes of keeping away from worldly society and becoming immortals. That is evident in Nihon Ryoiki and Anecdotes About Spirits and Immortals. This thesis aims to discuss the similarities and differences of fairy stories in the two literatures and research its historical backgrounds and deep reasons. The results show that the main reason for the similarities and differences is that both are influenced by Buddhist thought and Taoist thought, but the period of production and the integration of culture are different.
