In the novel Anthills of the Savannah, the author rewrites the metropolitan language --- English by directly using untranslated words of Igbo language, fusing the syntax of Igbo language into the lexical forms of English, and transcribing the English into dialect forms. Such rewriting has two purposes, one is to illustrate that the “english” he uses is “a new english” that is different from the standard English. The second is to declare that the use of vernacular, Igbo words and syntax themselves give expression to the African cultural authenticity. By appropriating and abrogating the privilege of the standard English, the author subverts the cultural “authenticity”and “centrality” that the standard English represents and achieves the purpose of reconstructing the African cultural identity.
