Objective To investigate the value of iterative decomposition of water and fat with echo asymmetry and least-squares estimation(IDEAL)technique in orbital MRI when patients with fixed Metal dentures by comparing image quality and effect of fat suppression with frequency-selective fat saturation(FS)technique.Methods38 patients with fixed Metal dentures accepted orbital MRI,the materials of the fixed Metal dentures were all Ni-Cr alloys.Scanning sequences contained axial, coronal and oblique sagittal FS T_2WI and IDEAL T_2WI,15 of them accepted contrast enhanced axial, coronal and oblique sagittal FS T_1WI and IDEAL T_1WI.Image quality and effect of fat suppression between the two fat suppression techniques were compared. Results The image quality scores and the effect of fat suppression scores of axial, coronal and oblique sagittal IDEAL T_2WI were all higher than those of FS T_2WI(P=0.000).The image quality scores and the effect of fat suppression scores of axial, coronal and oblique sagittal IDEAL T_1WI were all higher than those of FS T_1WI(P=0.000)after contrast enhanced. Conclusion IDEAL can replace FS as a routine technique in orbital MRI in patients with fixed Metal dentures, which provides more uniform effect of fat suppression and higher image quality.
