Many studies have been written about the China trade in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, most of which focus on the European East India companies and Sino-European relations. These interactions were of utmost importance in understanding the trade and are well-deserving of the great attention. they have commanded with many books and articles on the subject. However, hidden beneath many of these exchanges is another story which is equally deserving of our attention—that private individuals within Asia were actually sponsoring and financing many of the voyages to China. Owing to few private records surviving, it was not until recently, when new data emerged, that we have been unable to show these inter-Asian connections. This study is about the many ambiguous faces of the Canton trade, including Moors, Greeks,Armenians, Parsees, Jews and Southeast Asians, all of whom, at one time or another, were involved in the trade and in underwriting voyages to China. They tell another side of the story, which shows that our understanding of SinoEuropean trade and relations is much more complicated that what we previously thought.
