The history of Armenian manuscript production, which lasted for more than ten centuries, both represents and shapes Armenian religious and cultural traditions. The corpus of existent medieval Armenian manuscripts, containing various elements in the collective memory and identity construction of the Armenians,is a type of symbolic system as well as object of perception, that requires simultaneous textual and pictorial exegesis. This article focuses on the language of'hand'in Armenian illustrated gospels.By closely examining the gospel collection at Chester Beatty Library in Dublin,it attempts to contextualize the semantic possibilities of Armenian gestures in the background of Christian iconography and exegetics.
