The straight back (zhi) dagger-axes (ge) with raised braces (lan) and no hu (extra metal descending from the base of the blade) discovered at the Jinsha site in Chengdu are relatively early bronze dagger-axes. This paper will divide them into two types, arguing that they are mostly from the upper stratum of Erligang to the (Shang) Yinxu period, while a portion of them date to as late as the early part of the Western Zhou. The two types all originated from the central plains region, and made their way to the Chengdu plain through the Guanzhong basin and northwestern cultural corridor. The spread of the A-type in the north, northwest and southwest shows that Shang culture was rapidly expanding in the middle Shang period.
