The spread of modern Japanese Buddhism in northeast China can be divided into two periods. Before the establishment of the Puppet Manchukuo, Japanese Buddhism fo- cused on setting up bases and branches in northeast China. After the establishment of the Puppet Manchukuo, along with the deepening of the Japanese imperialist invasion into Chi- na, Japanese Buddism further expanded the territories of the sectarian temples, and also re- named the northeastern region of China as "Manchukuo" to cooperate with Japanese government's support for the Puppet Manchukuo. Japanese Buddhism had expanded its mis- sionary territory to the entire northeastern region of China even out of the occupied areas of the Kwantung Bureau. The active expansion of Japanese Buddhism in the occupied area of Japanese militarism is the result of not only the developing needs of Buddhist sects but also the distorted view of war of Japanese Buddhism. The spread of Japanese Buddhism in the northeastern region of China and, after the July 7th Incident, in the entire China, should take irrevocable war responsibilities to a certain extent.
