1894-1895年的甲午战争对近代中日两国而言都是转折性的历史事件。在这场战争中,日本几乎是举国动员才获得了最终的胜利。为了最大限度地煽动国内的侵华舆论,日本政府尤其重视与新闻媒体的合作,并借用了摄影术这种新式宣传手段。为此,先后有一大批来自官方及民间的摄影师得以奔赴战场进行战地报道,他们所拍摄的照片被整理成各类"写真帖"。这些时效性很高的照片不但生动形象地反映了激烈的战况,宣扬了日军的赫赫"战绩",更在某种程度上刺激了日本国内的战争狂热。作为官方指定的摄影机构,日本陆军参谋本部陆地测量部写真班拍摄的《日清战争写真帖》无疑最具代表性。而透过该写真帖中的照片,不难看出日本日益膨胀的侵华野心,以及试图刻意美化侵略、掩盖其战争罪行的险恶用心。
The Sino-Japanese War(1894–1895) was a historical turning point in the modern history of both China and Japan. In Japan, almost the whole nation was mobilized in order to win this war. To shape domestic public opinion in favour of the invasion, the Japanese government collaborated with the press and promoted photography as an innovative means of propaganda. A lot of governmental or individual photographers worked on the battlefields and took numerous pictures, which later were made into different albums. These timely photographs presenting fierce fights and "battle achievements" of the Japanese army had, to a certain extent, contributed to the intensifying cult of war in Japan. The photo album entitled日清战争写真帖and produced by an official photography team under the Geodetic Survey Department of the Headquarters of the General Staff of Japanese Army gives the best examples of such photographs. It reflects Japan's aggressive ambitions and attempts to justify the invasion or conceal its war crimes.
