The refusing party in a conversation of Chinese speakers uses auxiliary acts like Supportive Move(s) to cut into the conversation as an effective means to maintain good relationships with each other and provide the premise for smooth commu- nication. This study uses acts of refusal in Chinese and Japanese, especially the refusal of a request, to analyze the similarities and differences of the rejection mode in the two languages and finds the influence of the request prompt on reducing communicative misunderstanding.
