摘要
清代苏州慈善放生事业格外兴盛,出现了为数众多的放生机构。其中既有以各种动物为放生对象的放生会,又有专以耕牛为对象的养牲局和放牛局。它们大多采用募资收买动物,并予以保护和喂养的办法,宗旨是保护动物的生命。放生机构多属民办慈善事业,但也得到官府一定程度的支持。清代地方社会之所以积极举办放生活动,一方面是受中国传统道德感召的结果,另一方面也反映出地方精英促进社会和谐和维持农业生产的努力。
In the Qing Dynasty, the charitable causes of saving animals in Suzhou were flourishing, and a large number of related organizations emerged. There were both Release Organizations which saved a variety of animals, and Release Cattle Bureau which only saved farm cattle. Most of them used the method of raising funds to buy the animals and to protect and feed them. The purpose was to protect the life of animals. The organizations of saving animals were mostly private charities, but they had also been supported by the government. In the Qing Dynasty, the local community actively held the causes of saving animals for the following reasons： in the first place, it was the result of the Chinese traditional moral appeal; secondly, it also reflected the efforts of the local elites to promote social harmony and to maintain agricultural production.
