摘要
孟子道性善,荀子后起主性恶,肆力批判前贤。两人论心见解同样扞格不入,对于孟子治心的功夫,荀子尤其蔑视。事实上,孟、荀对心的认识迥然有别,与其较量两者高下,不如实事求是,让双方对话,将更有利于我们了解战国儒者对心性的认识的演变。由于时代有先后,相隔数十百年,孟荀两家论心术修养各有所承,不尽相同,在此不拟旁涉而专就其论心术之旨,阐述其异同。
Mencius advocated that human nature is innately good whereas Xunzi criticized him relentlessly and argued that human nature is bad. Similarly,the two Confucian thinkers were also at odds in their conception of the heart-mind,and Xunzi despised in particular Mencius' s personal cultivation of the heart-mind. Instead of superimposing our philosophical preferences on the two thinkers when we try to unpack their own views on the heart-mind and its cultivation,this paper presents Xunzi's criticism in his words and imagines how Mencius could have responded in his own.
