"Qu" as an essence has been long emphasized in Chinese ancient drama, which sticks to the idea of "qu as a form of poetry" so that the study of Chinese ancient drama highlights its lyricism much more than its narrative characteristics. With the narratology in- troduced into the study of drama, researches on narrative characteristics of Chinese ancient drama made great progress in the late of last century. However, most of them focused on textual narration much more than the narrative characteristics in the performance. This article attempts to show the uniqueness of narration tradition in Chinese drama and reflect the reason of "narration" hidden behind "lyricism" by referring to the tradition of narration in Western drama and disclosing the nature and characteristics of narrative in the performance.
