In 2015,four pieces of literature regarding a lost dog were excavated from a Han tomb in Yangzhou,Jiangsu. Having their research based on a comparative( re-) examination of the archaeological materials and textual records, the present authors assert that dog did play quite a significant role in the everyday and even the politico-military life in Qin and Han dynasties. In short,it was highly valued. The attention paid to dog was an embodiment of utilitarianism and superstition,as well as giving expression to the respect for the animal life. In this sense, this case might shed revealing light on the sprout of animal right in the ancient China.
