摘要
在简要阐述拒绝语的定义、特点、分类及其在人类生活交往中的语用功能基础上,根据"面子保全论"理论,认为面子是每一个社会成员意欲为自己争得的那种公众中的"个人形象",由于在会话等言语交际中,拒绝语或多或少会威胁交际双方的积极或消极面子,所以拒绝者多采用间接拒绝的方式。本文重点分析英语间接拒绝的9种策略,用语例加以分析每种策略的目的、功能和效果。旨在对跨文化交际提供一定的指导作用,帮助需要使用英语的人们掌握在不同的语境中更地道地拒绝他人的能力,从而实现顺利交际。
The paper first makes an introduction to refusal speech act in terms of its definition,characteristics,classifications and pragmatic functions in social communication.Then,according to Brown and Levinson's face saving theory,face is referred to as the"public image that every member(of a society)wants to claim for himself",which is divided into the positive face and the negative face.Since refusals can more or less threaten or damage both participants' face in verbal interaction,in most cases refusers would choose indirect refusing strategy so as to save both of the refusee's and refuser's face.The paper categorizes pragmatic strategies of English refusals into direct refusals and indirect refusals,and then further classifies indirect refusals into 9 types,and illustrates the purposes,functions and effects of each strategy through examples.It is hoped that the paper could contribute to the study of cross cultural communication and help people make refusals in English more idiomatically in different circumstances so as to achieve smooth communication.
