Bai Juyi is one of the greatest Chinese poets in the Tang Dynasty while Edwin Robinson is a representative of American naturalistic poet. Their artistic achievements have exerted crucial influences on domestic and world literature. As for Bai Juyi,his poems"The Everlasting Sorrow"and" The Song of Pipa", are extremely famous. However, his"The Old Charcoal Seller"seems almost neglected. Speaking of Edwin Robinson, compared with other outstanding naturalistic writers, he does not receive due attention even in modern times. Even his famous poem"Richard Cory", which is unknown to most people. Therefore, this article will try to explore the two writers' representative works"The Old Charcoal Seller"and"Richard Cory"in terms of their similarities and differences as well as the significances of their works from the perspective of social realities and cultural differences.By doing this, it is not difficult to find that the characters they described lived with different cultural background and life experiences, but they were made to transcend the cultural and age gap in that they reflect the nature of real life and emotions, thus striking a chord in readers' heart.
