Jonathan Tel's collection of stories The Beijing of Possibilities tells survivance stories of those "friends from afar." Focusing on three human-becoming-animal stories "The Beijing of Possibilities," "The Year of the Gorilla" and "The Book of Auspicious and Inauspicious Dreams," and introducing the concepts of "becoming," "line of flight," "deterritorialization" and "facialization" by contemporary philosophers Deleuze and Guattari, this paper finds out that Tel's Beijing narrative affirms the survivance wisdom of those "friends from afar"; it is "monkey" wisdom with fluent "changes" as its core. Thus, those "friends from afar" are nomads in metropolis in the sense of Deleuze and Guttari. In addition, this paper explores Tel's yearning for Chinese traditional culture and his awareness of globalization revealed in his Beijing narrative.
