Ezra Pound’s “The Seven Lakes” was based on the English translation of Yu Jian’s poem inscribed in the paintings of “Eight Views of Xiaoxiang” by Sasaki Genryu. Through examining historical materials, this article analyzes the reasons why, during its spread to the West and East,Yu Jian was mistaken as the author of the poem. It also discusses the contexts of “Eight Views of Xiaoxiang” and how they are spread in Japan by using the image of “distance.” Hence, the significance is recognized of “Eight Views of Xiaoxiang” in connecting Eastern and Western culture.
