Made of pottery or porcelain, the pots with dish-shaped mouth first appeared in the Western Han Dynasty and got development from the Eastern Han Dynasty, Three Kingdoms Period, the Western and Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Southern and Northern Dynasties to the Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties. This type of pots is usually used as a reference of dating for their unique forms and clear developing sequences. According to the inscriptions on the unearthed objects, it can be inferred that the chickenspout ewer(might be with dish-shaped mouth) was probably called "Ying" during the period from Three Kingdoms to Southern and Northern Dynasties. The current author mainly sorts out the unearthed pots with dish-shaped mouth in this period to establish the scientific chronological sequence of this type of pots and make a study on their distribution, functions and other relevant issues. The majority of the pots with dish-shaped mouth in the Three-Kingdoms Period and in the Western Jin Dynasty are similar for the short shapes with swelling bellies. The pots with dish-shaped mouth become bigger and taller in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. In the Southern and Northern Dynasties, the position of the contracted neck is higher and then these pots seem more coordinate as a whole. The pots with dish-shaped mouth in the period from Three Kingdoms to the Southern and Northern Dynasties are discovered in many regions, especially in Nanjing area. The dish-shaped mouth of the pot may start for the practical use and then play the role of decoration later.
