In Swimming Home, Deborah Levy delineates the psychological crisis caused by depression and love-deficient trauma to demonstrate modem people＇s attitudes toward familial relation, friendship and love. The verbal humor, situational humor and deadpan humor in her work, full of wits and meanings and provoking our epiphany, deal with the repressed situations in the plot of the novel. In addition, by means of her specific ways of conveying situational humor, she presents the varied mindsets of human beings and their social cognition in situations of miscomprehension, disappointment and anxiety, and in this way sheds light on subtle problems in modem ethics. Basing her novel on chilly humor to describe the identity crisis, emotional crisis and interpersonal crisis in modem society, she highlights the artistic effects of chilly humor, makes invectives against human nature＇s seamy side, and demonstrates her new insights into social and familial problems.
