摘要
文章从认知-语用视角探讨了"I don’t do X"构式的语用义及其实现动因。"I don’t do X"是美国英语中的惯用口头表达式,是一种否定式的简单及物构式。该构式包括动词do、施事I和受事X,其中,I don’t do是常项,X是变项,可以是名词或形容词。对从CO-CA语料库中提取的真实用例的分析表明,"I don’t do X"具有"我不愿涉及与X有关的任何状况"的构式义,而构式义对X的语义限制正是"I don’t do X"语用义实现的动因,说话人可以通过使用该构式来表达幽默、创新、概括和拒绝的语用义。
This paper attempts to explore, from a cognitive-pragmatic perspective, pragmatic meanings and their motivations of I don't do X construction. I don't do X is a commonly used colloquial expression in American English. It is a negative form of a simple transitive construction, the verb being do,and the agent and patient being I and X respectively. In this construction,I don't do is constant, while X is variable, which can be either a noun or an adjective. Based on the analysis of data from COCA,this study posits that I don't do X construction has the constructional meaning that "I don't want to be involved in anything concerning X." It is the semantic constraint of this constructional meaning on X that motivates the pragmatic meanings of I don't do X construction. Speakers can use this construction to express pragmatic meanings such as humor, novelty, generalization and refusal.
