This paper argues that the character ■in the stone inscriptions from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Sui Dynasty should be a variant of 瓊( qiong). The variants of 瓊, like and ?, may be the origins of ■. The character ■is also used as a variant of 阗( dian) in于阗( yudian, state name) in Buddhist literature. The two variants share the same graph, but have different pronunciations and meanings. The interpretation of ■as 瑱( dian) in Korean version of longkan shoujing( 龙龛手镜) should be re-investigated.
