摘要
美国战争小说家詹姆斯·琼斯的代表作《从这里到永恒》体现了战争背景下人与工业社会的分裂关系,表现出以个性自由、平等自立、乐观自信为精髓的美国个人主义思想在科技社会的演变过程。琼斯意在展现传统个人主义建构下美国人的价值观和道德观在20世纪上半期的困境,表达他对个人主义精神在极权机构中被压制的焦虑,和对个人主义如何走出困境的思考。
From Here to Eternity is the masterpiece of American war novelist James Jones. The novel reveals the disintegrating relations between human and industrial society in the circumstance of war, reflecting the evolution of American individualism which means individual freedom, equality and independence, optimism and self-reliance, upon the impact of the development of capitalism and advanced technology. Jones intends to present the dilemma of American value and moral standard constructed by traditional individualism in the early decades of the 20th century, and recall the traditional spirit as well as his solicitude for the future of individualism.
