The Moravian missionaries were the earliest German people to arrive in Tibetan area and the largest missionary group to stay there for the longest time. The Moravian missionaries were different from the Catholic missionaries, for they had a strong Protestant understanding of Tibetan Buddhism. Owing to the historical background, the Moravian missionaries’ descriptions of and commentaries on Tibetan Buddhism were generally negative, and even demonizing. The cultural exchange between Tibet and the West in the actions of Moravian missionaries was also very unbalanced. However, the history of Moravian missionaries in Tibet serves as a good case for the studies of relations between Christianity and Tibet Buddhism in modem times.
