This article begins with the stark contrast between the early works and the recent works of Herzog & de Meuron, and continues to investigate the reasons behind their shift in attitude towards the building skin. Cross-referencing between theories and projects, it follows the development of Herzog & de Meuron from its early focus on the expression of surface materials to the later obsession with the spectacular and seductive quality of ornamental skins, then to the recent tendency of integrating structure, space, and ornament. The conclusion is that the shift from the early glamorous dressing to the recent nakedness comes from a never-changing attitude: the pursuit of the origin of architecture.
