Pan was originally an Arcadian god of shepherds and nature. He became a Panhellenic god inthe 5th century BC. With his characteristics merged with other Olympians, he was worshipped as the patron ofnature in Greek mythology. Focusing on the study of Pan, the paper explores the relationship between godsand nature, between gods and religion. Taking Arcadia, Pan's birthplace, as a main clue, the paper analyzesthe pastoral tradition in Western literature and art. Finally, based on the mythical archetype, it discusses themythical complex of Pan in Lawrence's works. By interpreting the far-reaching influence of Pan on Westerncivilization in literature, art, religion and philosophy, the study can help people read and appreciate myth-related writing more effectively, offering insights into level-headed criticism and evaluation of modern literature.
