Edgar Allan Poe's "Art for art's sake" was not accepted by some of the existentialist, particularly Camus. However, his multi-dimensional compositions have won him worldwide reputation as even more a part of the contemporary American literary scene than many of his more "nationalistic" peers. This paper aims at probing into Poe' s awareness of absurdity in his urban writing with the case study of The Man in the Crowd, analyzing his concern on people' s spiritual crisis and exposure of the nihility and absurdity of modern society, and the alienation and dissimilation of social relationships in the transitional period via metaphoric depiction of solitary and dissimilated urban landscape, awkward predicament for individual belongingness and human existence. Poe' s delineation of the solitary, ahenated and nihilistic inner world of urban citizens, and his exploration of the motivation for the pursuit of the narrator as well as the pursuant, has revealed the nihility and alienation of urban Flaneurs (including himself). Hence, the paper safely draws the conclusion that Edgar Allan Poe initiated absurd narrative which is unclaimed in 19^th century American romantic literature.
