《人群中的人》是爱伦·坡略显带自传色彩的短篇小说,在小说中他以写实主义白描手法,对穿梭于伦敦大街小巷的形形色色的人群做了细致的描写,既表现了人类在现代工业文明笼罩之下人性被扭曲和异化之后所衍生出的精神空虚、情感孤寂的精神状态,也彰显了作者对人类生存困境和发展危机的深刻焦虑和人文关怀。小说中的神秘老人昼夜不停地追逐人群,从另一个侧面揭示了坡作为一位特立独行的唯美艺术家在工业化、现代化和都市化进程中的艰难处境,以及其内心深处潜隐难言的孤独、苦闷和无奈。
In his autobiographical short story ＂The Man of the Crowd＂, Poe depicts in realistic detail a variety of people shuttling back and forth in the streets of London. The characters not only display people＇s mental state of being spiritually barren and lonely, which comes from the humanity distorted and alienated by the modern industrial civilization, but also manifests the writer＇s deep concern over the living predicament and development crisis of humans. The mysterious old man going after people all the time shows, to some degree, the difficult situation where Poe finds himself in as an aesthete in the course of industrialization, modernization and urbanization, and the unutterable loneliness, depression and helplessness hidden in the depth of his heart.
