Since November in 2014, an infectious disease has emerged in many duck farms in some regions of China, which characterized by serious growth retardation and short bills with protruding tongues. Based on the pathological changes, the disease was tentatively designated beak atrophy and dwarfism syndrome (BADS). In this study, fourteen samples including tongue and organ tissues were collected from the diseased ducks in Liaocheng, Shandong province, and all liver and spleen samples were duck parvovirus positive detected by PCR. In addition, a virus strain was isolated from spleen tissue sample with 9-day-old duck embryos, and PCR results showed that the isolate was positive for duck parvovirus, designated SD. Sequence analysis based on a 659 bp fragment of the virus DNA, partial of Rep and VP1 gene sequence of SD strain revealed that the isolate was most closely related to goose parvovirus. Moreover, the clinical signs of BADS were able to be reproduced in one-day-old Cherry Valley Peking ducks by artificial infection with the isolate of a duck parvovirus. These evidences indicated that the BADS might be caused by duck parvovirus infection.
