Roman poet Ovid is the true hero in Brodsky' s "Letter to Horace," with whom the Russo-American poet shares both a fate of banishment and some key notions of poetics. In this epistle, by discoursing on exile, empire, imagination and truth, Brodsky censures Horace and Virgil for their conformity to Augustan ideology, but extols Ovid for his adamant adherence to the logic of art and his craftsmanship. Through it all, his own theory on poetry is also revealed, which treats languages as the essence of poetic truth.
