The paper introduces the importance of the spill coaming structure for oil tankers and describes in detail the requirements of classification rules, international conventions, regulations and other relative requirements. It lists several common types of spill containment and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages. It is summarized the relevant details and requirements of spill coaming located at the fore, midship and aft areas. The free surface effects caused by containment of a cargo spill during liquid transfer operations or of boarding seas while underway are little. The spill coaming shall be considered in the general arrangement and shall be detailed at the stage of construction design.
