"Carthage", Joyce Carol Oates' s latest novel, with the opening of an unusual case of a missing girl, tells the veteran Bret's disillusioned life and the Mayfields' emotional vicissitudes and psychological trauma. The author uses multiple narrative angles collecting together different characters' fragmented memories, and expressed not only her reflections and criticism to the Iraqi War and American contemporary civilization, but also her consideration of problems as familial ethics, ethnic differences and globalization in the conflicts of multiple discourses.
