The methods of mapping, exploration and representation are employed by many contemporary American novelists. By virtue of such methods, the authors are able to engage the real world in their dialogues and describe the inner worlds of the characters. Reflecting on the nature of humanity, these authors express their longing for redemption, and their creation of the narrative space of redemption implies the so-called "wasteland awareness," an awareness that accompanies the modern men's effort to overcome the present cultural predicaments. Reading against this background, in this article I argue that there are three recognizable thematic features of the twenty-first-century American fictions, namely, 1) an active response to the 9/11 attack and its aftermath; 2) a salient concern for politics, humanism and value reconstruction; and 3) a thoughtful interrogation of humanity in the new age of war and terror.
