The prehistory of travel writing is traced to the Bible and Odyssey. The writing became an essential part of travelling and popular with the reading public since the sixteenth century. Travel writing has not been taken seriously and emerged as a key theme for the hu- manities and social sciences until 1980s. Travel writing is regarded as the most socially and culturally important genre with cultural and poetic value which records how European na- tions identify themselves and others. Academics concentrate on rhetorical strategy and dis- course of travel writing and relationship between representation of culture and production of imperial knowledge. This article is to introduce the Anglo-American academic concentrations on travel writing by three dimensions : imperial narratives and travel writing, construction of history of travel writing, authentic and untruthful travel accounts.
