Nucleostemin(NS) is a GTP-binding protein, shuttling between nucleolus and nucleoplasm, and malnly located in the nucleolus. NS plays an important role in maintaining the undifferentiated state of stem cells, modulating cell cycle and proliferation and apoptosis of several cancer ceUs and stem cells. But the mechanism involved in regulation of cell proliferation of NS is currently still controversial. Some are convinced that NS promotes cell proliferation and inhibits cell apoptosis combined with p53, another part of the researchers consider non-p53 pathway is the regulatory factor for influencing the cellular functions.
