Feng Menglong's work Sanyan in Ming Dynasty and same-period novel The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare both expresses the significance of keeping good faith and abiding by contract. The similarities of the same or similar background, theme, narrating ways, character shaping open up the possibility of comparison of the two, while the differences in terms of different spirits of contract under differed notions open up the necessities of comparison. It is worth exploring the eastern and western business culture, the contract spirit and realistic significance embodied in the two novels.
