This paper observes the effect of translational language on the evolution of the original language, arguing that, as far as discourse markers are concerned, translational Chinese has played an important part in the evolution of modern Chinese, which cannot be adequately accounted for without the support of empirical data. By the help of the historical and comparable corpora, the study compares the use of sentence-initial evidential markers in Chinese in the four periods of 20th century. It finds that Chinese uses more evidential markers to frame discourse than it did before baihuawen ( vernacular Chinese) movement, which implies the change in use owes a great deal to baihuawen transla- tions at that time. It is also pointed out that selective grammatical copying, a major way of language contact, yields highly isomorphic patterns, and enhances the use frequency of their equivalents in the Chinese basic code, which ac- celerates their pragmaticalization. As a result, the model code (e. g. English) and basic code (e. g. Chinese) are be- coming similar in the use of evidential discourse markers.
