The novel The Biography of Shrimp written in 1947 by Huang Guliu, having both popular literary quality and an education goal of spreading the proletarian revolution, has had a historic acceptance of nearly seventy years. In this process, the same textual factors have had different historic acceptance in different historical stages. In 1940s and 1950s, the left-wing critics approved the novel's popularization achievement, but severely criticized its narration of revolution. Since 1980s, the geographical features and popular features of the novel have been re-affirmed by critics and fully absorbed to produce TV serials named Shrimp, with the revolutionary features of the novel being weakened. In contrast, researchers have kept silence on the novel when writing literary history during the same period. By investigating the historic acceptance of The Biography of Shrimp, we can understand the issue of popularization of modern and contemporary Chinese literature more deeply, and catch a glimpse of the changes of Chinese literary theory of more than half a century.
