The thanatopsis is a constantly renewed subject in poetry. Emily Dickinson regards death in a unique perspective. In her poem named Because I Could not Stop for Death, Death looks more like a cultivated gentleman. Death and "I" seat in the same carriage on the way to the graveyard, which shows her sanguine thanatopsis. However, Tiao Yuanming's Elegy always sings a sad melody that represents his woeful thanatopsis. This paper compares the similarities and differences between Because I Could not Stop for Death and Elegy (the Third), focusing on analyzing two poets' different thanatopsis. Then this thesis studies the cultural elements behind their different views on death.
