摘要
自东学西渐,特别是理雅各率先翻译《中国经典》以来,中国古典文献英译的实践和研究逐渐成为一门显学。华裔学者刘殿爵教授翻译的儒家和道家经典得到了西方学者的认可,他的译文不是单纯的两种文字的形式转换,更是两种思想的深度交流。本文分析了刘殿爵先生典籍英译的特色,探究其译文受到广泛认同的原因。作为一个有思想深度的研究型译者,刘殿爵教授的翻译策略和实践堪称中华文化外译的典范。
Since Chinese literature was introduced to western readers,especially after James Legge translated The Chinese Classics into English,more and more attention has been attached to the translation of Chinese classics and its research. Professor D. C. Lau’s translation of Daodejing,Confucious Analects and Mencius was widely recognized,because his translation is not only mere verbal transform but also a communication between two cultures. In this article,the features of his translation are explored. A conclusion is reached that his successful translation resulted from the fact that he is not merely a translator but rather a researcher of both translation and ancient Chinese philosophy. He set a fine example for the translators engaged in translating the Chinese literatures.
