Gardens have been a source of healing and comfort for ages, but their intentional inclusion in American hospitals and healthcare facilities has been embraced only recently. However, there is at least one American medical institution, Johns Hopkins Medicine that was ibunded in 1873, on the principle that the intentional and careful integration of buildings and abundant landscape would afford "solace to the sick and ornament to the city". More than a century' later, the healing gardens of Johns Hopkins new Clinical Care and Children's Center fully integrate the buildings and landscape to offer eight distinct but linked gardens to help promote healing and comfort to all who use them.
