In Chinese ancient marine literature, the ocean is the place where all rivers flow to. It represents vastness, broad- ness, profoundness, majesty and eternity. This concept of ocean was frequently expressed in the words of vastness, numerous- ness, greatness, limitlessness, being untouchable, and swallowing the sun and the moon. It was also expressed by the means of images of roc, whale, a huge legendary turtle, and terrifying waves. Chinese ancient literati based their understanding of ocean on the spiritual level, rather than the material and realistic level. They eulogized the ocean in order to express their spirit of free- dom pursuit, heroic temperament, lofty ambition and broad mind.
