Conservation education is an important function of modern zoos. In 2013 -2014, six conservation education projects based on "Behind -the -Scenes" educational programs were developed at Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo. We used questionnaires to evaluate the programs from April to July 2014. The educational programs were in line with family tour market demands. Three factors influenced the development of the early conservation education projects, including market- ing promotion, program content and teachers. We found that market promotion was most effective when it resulted from the recommendations of friends or from propaganda on the internet. The program content focused on being close to animals or describing animals proved to be most popular. On the form of the program, children 4 -6 years of age preferred games but children 7 -9 years of age preferred stories about animals.
